When my Kids are the Expert

Sometimes our kids know better. From generation to generation there are differences from social, emotional and cultural. These differences need to be acknowledged and respected. Just because things are different doesn’t mean that they are wrong. Parents are seen as the authority and decision maker, no matter what. But what happens when our kids know better than we do? Do we acknowledge this insight and let our kids make their own decision? Or do we simply work in conjunction with our kids and take their insight into consideration?

Is There a Right Answer?

No. I do not believe there is a systematic way to make decisions that concern our children. Making decisions is not linear, but a winding road that bends and curves based on the landscape. There are many factors that need to be considered when making decisions for our kids. Yes, there are times when we need to listen to our kids. Their experience, perspective and feelings do need to be taken into account. Parents make decisions based on the knowledge they have and their own experience. What we need to remember is the road we walked is not the road our children walk.

That is not the way my Parents did it.

It can be difficult to let go of traditional rules, morals and customs. Many times parents feel they are disrespecting their lineage if they go outside the lines. There is a balance where parents can be in dialogue with their kids, while still holding true to their own moral compass and beliefs. Having an exercise of communication no matter the subject is a great way to begin to understand and empathize with what their child is going through.

I Have so Much to Learn.

Parenting is a journey that is exhausting, difficult and at times, humble and scares you in a way that makes it hard to breathe. If a parent ever says, parenting is easy, we never have issues. My response is always the same. Someone is not telling the truth. Parenting is the road that is best traveled with company. Counseling is appropriate for many issues that families are struggling with and are at a crossroads. Allowing your kids to make some decisions in their young life is one of the most positive things you can do for them. Letting them make decisions, mistakes and be able to come to you for guidance, is a seed that if sowed will be reaped years ago.
